CalArts students: therapy that fits a creative schedule

Studio hours, critiques, deadlines and a packed calendar don't leave much room for taking care of yourself. If you're a CalArts student, you may already know that support exists on campus, and that's a good thing. Sometimes it can still be hard to find a time or a person who fits.

An extra option when you need more flexibility

CalArts has its own support, and we think that's great. We're not here to replace it. We're here as another option when your schedule is unpredictable or you want a different kind of fit. You can use us alongside campus support or on your own, whichever feels right.

Our Newhall office is a short drive from Valencia, and we offer flexible daytime appointments as well as video sessions you can take from wherever you are.

Cost

Young people 25 and under may qualify for therapy at no cost to them. We'll check with you when you text us, so you don't have to figure out the paperwork alone.

Creative tools, if you want them

We also have a registered art therapist on our team. You don't need to be good at art, and you don't have to make anything to get support. Some people like using creative tools in session and some prefer to just talk. Both are welcome.

Signs studio stress may be taking a toll

Creative programs are demanding. Late nights, critiques, deadlines and the pressure to make something original can blur the line between normal intensity and burnout. It may be worth talking to someone if you notice constant exhaustion, losing interest in your work, creative blocks that feel like dread, trouble sleeping, skipping meals, or feeling like you are never doing enough.

Protecting your time during crunch weeks

When your schedule fills up, the first thing to go is usually care for yourself. A few small anchors help. Block your session on your calendar the way you would a class. Pick a time that is hard to bump, such as early morning or right after a studio block. Choose video sessions on days when travel is too much. And tell your therapist about your crunch weeks so you can plan around them together.

Using therapy alongside campus support

Therapy does not have to replace anything you already use. Campus resources can be great for quick help, and an outside therapist can offer steadier, longer-term support that fits your life beyond school. Many students use both. If you are not sure what makes sense, we are happy to talk it through.

How starting works

You can send a text to 661-383-2252. Let us know you are a student and a bit about what you are looking for, and our client care team will reach out directly. Sessions are available in person in Newhall or by video, and we offer a free 15 minute consult if you want to ask questions first.

Questions students ask

I have no free time. Is this realistic? Many students do one session a week, or find an every-other-week rhythm that fits. Tell us your schedule and we will work with it.

What if I am not sure my stress is "bad enough"? You do not need to be at a breaking point. If it is affecting your days, it is worth talking about.

Can I use art in therapy? Yes. We have a registered art therapist on our team, and creative approaches are available if they appeal to you.

What does it cost? Clients 25 and under may qualify for no-cost therapy even with insurance, and we also accept several insurance plans.

To get started, text us at 661-383-2252.

If you ever feel unsafe or in crisis, call or text 988 or go to your nearest emergency room.
